PRESS
RELEASE, FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 2/2/07
“WARM UP” WITH MENDOCINO COAST FREE SKOOL SATURDAY AT
ALL-AGES COMMUNITY CELEBRATION IN MENDOCINO
As we reach the half-way point of another chilly winter,
the volunteers with the Mendocino Coast Free Skool are
excitedly planning a “warm” community celebration
Saturday, February 10, 6-10pm with live music,
performance and a winter potluck meal, free to people of
all ages. “The Winter Warm Up For Spring Session 2007”
will be held one-night only in the beautiful Preston
Hall, on Main Street in Mendocino. The featured band,
“Tofu Sue’s Kitchen,”
brings together four local musicians fronted by
guitarist and songstress Sue Nagle to perform earth and
spirit inspired folk, funk and reggae. Tofu Sue’s
Kitchen was an audience favorite at the last year’s
Abalone Festival at the Caspar Community Center. The
“Winter Warm Up” offers a unique opportunity to enjoy an
evening of live music and talented local performance
free of charge in a comfortable, family-friendly,
alcohol-free environment.
“We want this event to share the spirit of Free Skool,”
remarked organizer Jez Anderson. “Not only will be have
danceable live music, but we’re also looking forward to
performances by local belly-dancers, a winter-foods
potluck, activities for youth and The Return of the Free
Box. We invite folks to bring a favorite dish for the
potluck, as well as clothes and household items for the
Free Box.” Free Box items that do not find their way to
a new home at the event will be donated to local
charities.
Free Skool supporters from accross the coast are getting
involved: Middle Eastern bellydance instructor Elika
Freeman of Westport is choreographing a special trio
dance performance for the evening. Albion
slam-poet/vocalist Destiny Laird is on the schedule to
deliver her signature blend of conscious rap and
spoken-word poetry. Laird, now 21, may be remembered for
an impromptu performance at the 2005 Living Culture
Festival at Jughandle Creek Farm in Caspar, where she
brought the crowd to their feet for a standing ovation.
Saturday’s Winter Warm Up will bring together Free Skool
volunteers, supporters and community members to
celebrate the past two years of Free Skool classes and
events and prepare for a Spring 2007 session. The
evening will include opportunities for community members
to share input, ideas and inspiration for future Free
Skool projects and classes. A photo display highlighting
Free Skool 2005-2007 is planned. The event will start at
6pm with a short invocation ceremony to gather warm
wishes for the Spring 2007 session, followed by the
potluck and live performances. Kitchen facilities are
available to warm up food, and serving utensils and
platters will be provided. |

organizers are also celebrating the award of their second grant
in two years from the local ACORN Learning Center. This newest
$1,000 grant is double the 2006 award, and will help fund the
Spring Session 2007. Based in Point Arena, ACORN raises funds to
help support small, localized education projects, such as Free
Skool. The Free Skool motto “We all teach, we all learn” well
sums up the philosophy of this all-volunteer group.
Founded in Spring 2005 by local activists sisters Avis and Jez
Anderson, the Mendocino Coast Free Skool is a project of the
nonprofit Mendocino Coast Environmental Center. All classes are
free and open to people of all ages.
The
mission of the Free Skool is to promote critical consciousness,
personal empowerment, intentional community and environmental
sustainability through the offering of free classes, workshops,
events and outings led by volunteers seeking to share skills and
interests with their community.
Inspired by this mission, organizers of Saturday's event at
Preston Hall are inviting other community groups to attend and
display information that promotes peace "in our homes, in our
communities and in our world." For more information about this
event or to get involved with Free Skool, community members are
invited to call 357-2481, email
